2/29/2024 0 Comments Does quicksand really exist![]() ![]() Rather than struggle, a victim of quicksand should stick to calm movements. Even humans, who can more readily process what’s happening to them, will struggle against the downward force of sinking. When a living organism gets caught in quicksand, its gut reaction is panic. Escaping quicksand Credit: Pierce Martin/ Flickr/ CC BY 2.0 Quicksand is often depicted as a death trap, but with the proper reaction, getting caught in it is not a dooming scenario. Anything that crosses it, from a small animal to a human, will start to sink. As it loses viscosity, the patch of quicksand becomes unable to hold up any weight. With these disturbances, water separates from the grains, causing the liquid-like consistency. Since there is such a space between the grains of sand, when there is a vibration or added weight, they become unstable. It’s more than just sand Credit: ChiccoDodi FC/ iStockĪlong with the air-filled space, quicksand is comprised of a third component - water. There is another component to the unusual formation, however, that helps give it that thick consistency. While composed of sand, quicksand’s qualities are due to the 30% to 70% of air found between each grain. It’s a non-Newtonian liquid, meaning it doesn’t follow the characteristics of Newton’s Law of Viscosity. Though it has the word “sand” in its name, quicksand is not just an unstable patch of solid granules. Just as depicted in the movies, quicksand appears to have a solid state, but when touched, turns into a gelatinous liquid that can trap a person. While it may sound like the creation of a science-fiction writer, quicksand is absolutely real. Since it’s likely a question that’s been burning a hole in your mind, it seems appropriate to answer the question once and for all: Is quicksand a real thing? Does quicksand exist? Credit: NPS/ Jacob W. Even if you've heard stories about run-ins with it, have you ever met somebody who’s actually come face to face with quicksand? Quicksand does occur in deserts, but only very rarely: where loosely packed sands occur, such as on the down-wind sides of dunes, the amount of sinking is limited to a few centimeters, because once the air in the voids is expelled the grains are too densely packed to allow further compaction.Īnswer originally published on October 7, 2002.You’ve watched cartoon characters sink into it, seen depictions of it on the Silver Screen, and may have even heard a tale or two about it, but is quicksand even real? Maybe it’s not something you’ve ever considered, but there is a real possibility that the notion of quicksand was a fictional creation. In such cases, the loose packing is maintained by the upward movement of water. Most quicksand occurs in settings where there are natural springs, either at the base of alluvial fans (cone-shaped bodies of sand and gravel formed by rivers flowing from mountains), along riverbanks or on beaches at low tide. ![]() ![]() The sand collapses, or becomes 'quick,' when additional force from loading, vibration or the upward migration of water overcomes the friction holding the grains together. This arrangement is similar to a house of cards in that the space between the cards is significantly greater than the space occupied by the cards. Because many sand grains are elongate rather than spherical, loose packing of the grains can produce sand in which voids make up 30 to 70 percent of the mass. In normal sand, grains are packed tightly together to form a rigid mass, with about 25 to 30 percent of the space (voids) between the grains filled with air or water. Quicksand is a mixture of sand and water, or sand and air, that looks solid, but becomes unstable when disturbed by any additional stress. ![]() Long, a sedimentologist at the department of earth sciences at Laurentian University in Sudbury, Ontario, explains. ![]() ![]() ![]() However, there were some areas that it did struggle with a little. ON1 also groups tonal adjustments separately from color adjustments instead of jumping back and forth between them. Firstly, there is a Midtones slider that Lightroom lacks. Although in some ways similar in appearance, it has some differences from Lightroom. The development tab will look familiar to anyone who has already adjusted raw images. Of course, it's impossible to include every last function of such a comprehensive program. Using ON1 Photo RAW as a file browser is quick and one can access photos that have not been imported into the catalog. But it also gives full control using layered adjustments, as required by more seasoned photographers. When processing images, ON1 Photo RAW can be used by novices with single-click adjustments. ON1 is built by photographers for photographers. That's unlike Photoshop, which has a far broader user base with numerous complex functions surplus to photo editing. ON1's editing is very much specialized for photography. It’s also a raw development tool and a photo editor a bit like Lightroom Classic’s Develop Module and Photoshop combined into one program. ![]() So, in that way, it is like Lightroom Classic’s Library module, but with an additional file browser. It is a comprehensive asset management tool that has a hybrid file browser and catalog. If you are not aware of what ON1 Photo Raw is, here’s a very quick résumé. Leading the way with innovations years ahead of the competition, its functions, like precise automated masking and AI-based noise reduction, appeared long before Adobe’s still hit-or-miss attempts. Audio: Nothing really stands out about it, but its definitely not bad. Control Scheme: If you have played first person shooters then it will be familiar. I guess hopping in a tree stand and sniping a dear in the heart from 500 yards away is pretty cool, but not really that great after the first ten times. You only have a few seconds to aim and fire to save your life. a cougar jumped out of nowhere and attacked me. I did like the actual hunting experience when there were a few tense moments, e.g. Sure you can go back and play the levels over, but there is just no variation. My biggest problem with the game is that it's bare bones and linear. The game also sports the occasional “bullet time” effects. A lot of virtual hunters will like the fact that the shooting takes into account wind and bullet drop. ![]() The aiming mechanic works similar to any standard first person shooter. Simulation/Realismįrom a pure aiming and shooting standpoint, Big Game Hunter 2012 does a fine job. There is also an interesting feature where you can upload your kill stats to Facebook. The menus are slick and its not hard to navigate. There are also instances where it can be drab and colors look dull. Graphically the game is more than adequate, dare I say beautiful at times. It just doesn’t mesh with how hunting should be. My biggest issue is simply the feeling of being forced fed throughout the game. This was marginally fun, but not enough to make me really want to play it more than once or twice. There is a mode called “Galleries” where you and another human player can shoot things duckhunt style. It's accurate, easy to use and, oh, and it's a freaking bow.Ī mixed bag is the only thing that can describe the gameplay as a whole. They all worked well, but I personally enjoyed using the compound bow the most. Howver, you do have a decent selection of weapons two rifles, a shotgun, a hunting pistol and a compound bow. While it's always fun upgrading your weapons, I can’t help but feel like the upgrades don't have much of an affect in game. Then with those points, you can upgrade your weapon. If you do this successfully you will score some extra points. These include shooting a deer in the heart, an Elk in the lungs and so on. You are given you certain objectives that you have to pass during hunts. The game basically centers on a group of gentlemen who are competing in a hunting tournament around the country. There is no exploring for the most part, which is unfortunate because that could add a whole new aspect to the genre. My hand is constantly being held as I go from hunt to hunt. The source of my frustration comes from how forced the gameplay feels. That’s not to say it’s a great game if you enjoy the sport, because it’s not. Gameplay Cabela’s Big Game Hunter 2012 is definitely a game for hunters, or those who aspire to hunt. While Cabela’s Big Game Hunter ’12 tries to change this with a story based hunting experience, it never really delivers anything but a mediocre venture. There has never been anything about them to reel in non-hunting gamers. Hunting games have always been a niche genre. ![]() 2/29/2024 0 Comments Nsfw rp discord![]() ![]() While there's a huge range of Discord servers out there, not all of them may appeal to you.
